Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station
On the 26th April 1986 the worlds worst nuclear accident happened at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant which was located on the northern border of the Ukraine and Belarus. The people of Belarus were exposed to radiation 90 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb

16 years on the people of Belarus are still effected by this disaster in the following ways:

- today only 1% of the land in Belarus is NOT contaminated, this means that food and water is poisonous to people and animals
- the average life expectancy is only 44 years old
- lots of children are in cancer hospitals, most cannot be saved due to the lack of medical treatment
- people still suffer from radiation burns from the debris and instant nose bleeds from the atmosphere
- it is a normal part of life to be frequently sick and sudden deaths are a regular occurrence
- 1.5 million children are at risk of cancer or leukemia, only 5% of children are healthy
- a large exclusion zone the locals have named 'death valley' has grown from 30km exclusion area to 70km
- babies are born with no arms, eyes and with tumors
- the death toll is forecast to reach 1 million
