ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT

AIM: to transform the FGYC garden from an unusable jungle to a community garden
AIM: to provide environmental youth work opportunities for young people

BACKGROUND:  for many years the land adjacent to Frimley Green Youth Centre had been an eyesore, remaining untouched for around twenty years. In October 1999 a group of young people involved in the FGYC 16+ project set out to improve the area....somewhat!. As the garden had remained untouched for so long (although some items found whilst working in the garden suggested that someone/people were using it!!) the amount of work required was huge, therefore it was decided to break the work down into phases to make things achievable.

BEFORE

PHASE ONE: OCT '99 - FEB '00

AFTER

work involved: clearing a mass of brambles and overgrown shrubbery, selected felling of holly trees, removal of old fencing and posts, erecting new split chestnut fencing, creating seating areas around two larger trees and creating paths using bark chippings

all the above work was carried out by young men from the FGYC 16+ who willingly gave up their free time on Saturday mornings (despite the odd hangover!) with the help and support of Mark Havler Surrey Countryside Ranger and Nick Jolly Youth Worker at FGYC. Everyone involved at FGYC cannot praise the following young people enough for their contribution to this project. Ben Cobbett, Simon Payne, Lee Purchase, Rob Hutson and Dave Gaunt. This work was made possible through an Environmental Bursary from Surrey Heath Borough Council
